ADVANCE PRAISE FOR
SQUIRREL INC:
A FABLE OF LEADERSHIP AND STORYTELLING
A BOOK BY
STEVE DENNING
TO BE PUBLISHED
BY
JOSSEY-BASS IN JUNE 2004

“Squirrel Inc. is a wonderfully refreshing look at leadership that contains countless insights on how stories create meaning and can inspire even cynical management to act.  This book is both provocative and evocative.  For weeks after reading this book, its central messages kept resonating in my head.  I highly recommend this book – and it is a great read, as well.
                                                                     John Seely Brown
Former Chief Scientist, Xerox Corp and
Director, Palo Alto Research Center (PARC)
Co-author, The Social Life of Information

“The success of a leader can best be measured by how many who actually followed. In the management literature of today, we are overestimating the more rational dimensions of leadership and underestimating the importance of how to craft a story that attracts the fullness of human desire. Steve Denning's work is an important reminder and great inspiration to all leaders who wish to connect with their employees on all the human dimensions required to create true followership.”
                                                                     Mats Lederhausen
                                                                     Managing Director, McDonald's Ventures,
                                                                     McDonald's Corporation

“Sometimes as you read a book, excitement flares through you igniting new understanding and certainty. Squirrel, Inc. is one of those books.  Chapter by chapter, I found myself stopping to think, write notes in the margin and look for powerful change stories.  Every leader, manager and seller of ideas or products deserves to read this book.  Read it and find the stories in your own life and organization.”
                                                                     Joyce Wycoff,
                                                                     Co-Founder, InnovationNetwork

“Good business leaders know that there is no hard line between soft and hard, between art and science, between reality and magic. Steve Denning, a master and a leader in the value of storytelling, shows in the book how they all combine in storytelling as a leadership tool.”
Jack Grayson, Chairman, Carla O'Dell President
American Productivity & Quality Center (APQC)

“Squirrel Inc. is invaluable because the formulas for “situation storytelling” are revealed in a clear and concise manner, and can be immediately applied.  Proven techniques are aligned with 7 different situations reoccurring in business, in our communities and our personal lives. The question is not whether storytelling successfully communicates knowledge or can persuade individuals into action, but rather if the appropriate level of passion and the correct storytelling techniques have been applied.
                                                                     Steven Wieneke
                                                                     Lead Knowledge Asset Manager
                                                                     General Motors Corporation

“What a wonderful story of growth and development! As we learn about this community of squirrels called Squirrel, Inc., we are taught about the ways that we interact with others. We learn the principles of leadership and how to apply them through different types of stories in a non threatening way. And, in the process we learn about ourselves. This is the best book on leadership that I have read since ‘Watership Down’ so many years ago.”
                                                                     Robert H. Buckman, Former CEO,
                                                                     Buckman Laboratories
President of the Applied Knowledge Group

“I've witnessed the power of narrative in my work and life, but haven't had the tools to effectively employ story when I've needed it most.  Denning's book provides the "how to" for which I've been looking.”
                                                                    M. Gary Ryan
                                                                      Director, Brand Development and Strategy
                                                                      People Magazine

“Squirrel Inc. is a fascinating book about leadership and change and the role of narrative in both.  Told as a fable through the dialogue of a community of squirrels, the narrative keeps your attention leading you to learn about some of those indescribable qualities of leadership that actually inspire others to follow.  I was particularly captivated by the section on leadership and resilience and would highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested the true nature of leadership.”
                                                                      Gayle Holtzinger
                                                                      Former Knowledge Manager,
                                                                      Shell Exploration and Production Co.

“Squirrel, Inc. is the best book I have read on the subject of how to take the art of storytelling and make a real impact on the life of a company. Moreover, it's an engaging read from cover to cover filled with useful ideas that you can immediately apply to real business challenges. While the setting is the fictitious world of squirrels, you won't fail to see a little of yourself and the heroes and villains of your own organization who daily fight to influence and change the hearts and minds of decision makers, staff, and the consumers you serve.”
                                                                     Richard Stone
                                                                     President, StoryWork Institute

“As a storytelling professional I consider Squirrel Inc. to be the premier resource for conveying the power of narrative in organizations today. It clearly articulates the distinctive attributes of effective storytelling, according to intent... perhaps the most useful way to approach the subject. This is the best thing I have read on effective organizational storytelling.”
                                                                     Seth Kahan
                                                                     Organizational Community Specialist

“I couldn't put Squirrel Inc, down! Steve Denning with brilliant writing and creativity has demonstrated the natural dynamic and beauty of integrating the imagination of the right brain with the container and analytic framework of the left brain. In doing so, Steve has demonstrated the power of story and why it works! Steve Denning has woven a story – that becomes our own – and in doing so, he is revolutionizing how organizations will succeed in the 2004 and beyond!  Reading Squirrel, Inc will simultaneously spur the imagination and hone the understanding of anyone who wants to be effective and fulfilled whether at work or at play.”
                                                                      Lynne Feingold
                                                                     Organizational consultant

“This book is something new. Nestled in what appears to be a simple story are elements of deep management concepts served up with new life and insights. Steve Denning blends story practice with management theory and draws you into both with subtle ease – one might even say, sleight of hand. Drawing from his own life experience – the greatest teacher of management – he has turned it into an engaging story of stories. I loved most that the characters seem every bit real and consistent – right to the end. They leave you thinking, ‘This could have happened!’”
                                                                      Madelyn Blair
                                                                      CEO,  Pelerei Inc

“During my 17 years as CEO of a landscape construction company, I struggled to find ways to increase morale, imbue our corporate ethos, and energize our staff. Toward that end, I ran workshops, hired industry consultants and talked a blue streak.  But I never thought about story telling.  As I read Steve Denning's theories, equally simple as clever, I felt sad for not bringing such an effective set of ideas into my company.  What a positive effect they would surely have had.
                                                                       K.D.Solit,
                                                                       Former President, Spring Gardens, Inc.

“Unique in describing how storytelling can be used as an effective leadership and organization change tool, Squirrel Inc. opens up a whole new field that has been largely ignored. A must fun-read for every business leader."
                                                                       Michel Pommier,
                                                                       Chad Cameroon Pipeline Projects,
                                                                       HQ Coordinator, World Bank

“Squirrel Inc takes organisational storytelling to the next level. As a professional storyteller working in the corporate environment I found that it articulates simply, effectively and instructively the most important aspects of storytelling within organisations. The thing I found most useful was the outlining of the seven highest forms of organisational storytelling and all the caveats. I believe it is an essential tool for every storyteller wanting to take the leap into the choppy waters of 'Corporania', as well as for story champions within organisations. And while stories can't solve all organisational issues they can make the journey more enjoyable.”
                                                                       Carol Russell, Organizational Consultant.

“When I realized, deep down, that analysis, however brilliant, explanations, however thorough, and reasons, however logical, would all leave things just as they were before, Squirrel Inc. showed me – clearly – another way.”
Larry Forster, Oil Industry Change Agent

Hear the buzz
on Steve Denning's book, The Springboard
"For me, reading The Springboard was just that, an amazing spring board for better understanding how to bring strategic change to organizations, how to communicate in ways that impact skeptical audiences and in general, how to rethink knowledge management from a customer perspective. It is also the best thing I have ever read on corporate communication."

John Seely Brown, Chief Scientist, Xerox Corp,
coauthor of The Social Life of Information

Denning is book is a treasure. Perhaps it is the wonderful use of language, perhaps it is the insights offered, or perhaps it is his honesty as he tells the story. It is filled with wisdom that is easily embraced through the story he tells. I have never seen a book with so many quotable quotes per page. This book shows why real experience becomes more powerful as it is related through the surrounding story.

  Madelyn Blair,
  Consultant to organizational change efforts
Steve Denning has written one of the more interesting and creative management books of the past few years. The Springboard reflects Denning's strong belief in stories as encapsulated knowledge and his own stories about the World Bank are strongly illustrative of his own passion and knowledge. This is the first book to give to anyone interested in  storytelling for organizational change. Read it, and learn from it, and enjoy it!
  Larry Prusak
Co-author of "(forthcoming) In Good Company: The Role of Social
             Capital in Organizations"
It is rare that a book works on so many levels.  On one level, Springboard tells the fascinating story of how the World Bank is harnessing knowledge for the biggest job of all: ending poverty around the world.  On another level, Denning is disarmingly self-reflective about his own struggles to discover how to use stories to drive commitment and action in the Bank. And, finally, it works as a primer for anyone, anywhere, trying to build a picture of what's possible through stories.  You won't forget the lessons learned, because the stories are so memorable. And that is part of the point, isn't it?  What a good story.
  Jack Grayson, Chairman and
  Carla O'Dell, President
American Productivity & Quality Center (APQC)
Denning s The Springboard is a dangerous tale, subtle at first reading, yet far reaching in its implications & If you want to learn how to change your company, your community, or even the world, this book will change you.
  Richard Stone
Author of The Healing Power of Storytelling
It possesses the qualities of a classic, in that it attains to capture the essence of very complex, dynamic, and fluid organizational situations and challenges in a very elegant, simple, effective, and even timeless manner. In short, it would not be an overstatement to consider this book as an intellectual milestone on the road to organizational wisdom, a knowledge-era Iliad and Odyssey put together in a wonderful combination of the art and craft of organizational change management, a true management science epic.
  Professor Elias Carayannis
  George Washington University
Hurray for this modern Aesop, who has provided his peers in management with a primer for the new millennium!
  James Donald Wilner
  Architect, Washington DC
What strikes is the integrity of the story told. Astonishing and amazing honesty coupled with the drive to interest and progress.
  Professor Margaret Grieco
  Napier University, Edinburgh, Scotland
As a professional who uses storytelling in the business world to catalyze community, I have found The Springboard by Steve Denning to be the manual I wish I had had ten years ago. Over and over again I appreciated his articulate description of the components and dynamics of good storytelling, and how to apply it in the world of business.
  Seth Weaver Kahan
  Professional storyteller
Whether your interest is in knowledge management, organizational change, or leadership, be sure to read Stephen Denning's wonderful book about the key role of storytelling: his deeply personal account of his journey to transform the World Bank into a knowledge organization is everything he says a good springboard story should be enjoyable, gripping, inspiring, eye-opening, and a springboard into new possibilities.
  Etienne Wenger
  Author of Communities of Practice
This book should be in tool boxes of leaders and internal change consultants in every organization. Steve Denning tells the inside story of an enormous change initiative at the World Bank.
  Mike Kaplan,
  Organizational facilitator
Wonderful book, and an exciting journey nicely put together.  The book is much larger than just a book on knowledge management.  And it is even more than just a book about storytelling.  It is a book about lightning insights, which mobilize and enliven a community, which, acting like strange attractors, bring a sense of meaning and purpose.
  Charles Savage
  Author of Fifth Generation Management
Storytelling as a knowledge management technique is becoming very popular. This is a very readable and insightful book that should be of interest to practitioners everywhere.
  Ramon Barquin
  Author of Data Warehousing Fundamentals
I had a hard time putting down. How often can one find a business book that imparts true wisdom in its full context as only a story can do? This book does for the reader what the "springboard" story did for World Bank. Both of them enable the reader or the listener to see and become part of a higher purpose.
  Margo Corbett
  Organizational change specialist
Never has there been so much concern with increasing organizational adaptability, with creating "learning organizations," with managing knowledge workers.  A relevant literature is growing fast but is still thin, and seems thinnest in the how to do it dimension.  This makes Denning's book particularly valuable.  It is also beautifully written, at once literate and plainspoken.
  Visiting Professor Elliot Berg
  University of Auvergne, France
A 106-year-old Chinese woman was asked the secret of her longevity.  Her two word reply:  "Welcome change."  Instead, as Stephen Denning illustrates in his wonderful new book, "The Springboard," most of us instead mightily resist change.  As a project finance lawyer in the energy business, I deal with an international industry in the midst of profound change.  The Springboard is a terrific tool to help lawyers and others communicate these changes to clients, lenders, regulators, and governments.  It contains exciting and workable ideas that are conveyed in a refreshingly readable style.  I particularly recommend it to lawyers and government executives.
  Lynne Hargis,
  Energy Lawyer and Arbitrator
This is a story of a reflective manager who listens to others and learns how to persuade others to listen to him; it is a story of how change really happens in large organizations.  Denning's book is subtly and compelling written and its messages are clear and strong.  His story should resonate widely with all those who aspire to make a difference in organizations.
  Martine Haas
  Harvard Business School
This living portrait of the political, intellectual and social challenges of moving knowledge management from an odd new idea to an actives program offers valuable experiential wisdom to other managers who hope to win their organizations over to a new way of working.
  Don Cohen
Co-author of (forthcoming) In Good Company: The Role of Social
             Capital in Organizations"
On the surface, it all seems deceptively simple - just tell a story and the organization will change.  Therein lies the paradox:  on the surface, it is a simple story.  Beneath the surface, though, it is a story of Denning's quiet persistence in pursuing a strategy, of shepherding, coaxing, coercing and guiding others over whom he had no authority to go in the direction of that strategy.
 Lesley Shneier
 Knowledge Management Specialist
The author has distilled out the essence of how most simply and effectively to convey knowledge: this is through  story telling.
  Karen McCrystal
  Web content producer and writer
Steve Denning's book demonstrates what he writes about.  He is a good "story teller."  I kept wanting to read more and more.  The power of story telling as a catalyst for change is clearly explained. And he provides a guide for how the rest of us can follow his lead.
  Mitzi Wertheim
  Center for Naval Analysis
The Springboard is profoundly important for everyone who is attempting to bring a community to life or induce a cultural shift into an organization,
